I would have to say some of the finest sushi in all of LA. Truly a hidden gem. The toro and chicken nan ban is my usual. As close to Tokyo as you can get. It's a small place so get there early.
Makomae Japanese Cuisine is my family's go-to restaurant that we visit at least once a week.
The food is simply delicious. As fans of authentic Japanese fare, we have tried just about everything on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. The sushi is amazingly fresh - you can taste the freshness of the fish. We especially love the Omakase, Chirashi bowl, Razor Clam in dashi soup, and Baby Bomb.
I cannot recommend this restaurant enough!
The fish is really fresh and the Chicken Nan ban is pretty good! Overall the food is good!
Service is also good. They are fast and attentive.
Although the space is small, it doesn't feel to cramped. But since it is small, you will have to wait in line for a while. So be prepared to wait in line.
If you are looking for high quality sushi but on a budget, this is the place to go! Their lunch special is nicely priced for what you get. We got the sushi and sashimi combo, and the quality of them was really good. What we got was more than enough as we were both satisfied/full afterwards. I also recommend the corn tempura, which is the first time I have ever seen that on a menu. The interior is nice and small; it reminded us of our time in Japan. The workers are friendly and kept checking in on us to make sure we were doing okay. Overall, we would come back!
FIVE STAR. Makomae is a hidden gem of a Japanese restaurant in Diamond Bar. We went for (my bday) dinner on a Wednesday - without a reservation - and there was about a 20 minute wait, so not too bad.
Here's what we recommend:
- Premium chirashi bowl ($34.95): this was amazing value. There was chutoro, uni, amaebi, salmon, tuna, and a whole lot more in this bowl. We even got the fried shrimp head on the side with it. Fish was amazingly fresh and we were very impressed! It's a must try!
- Salmon skin salad ($11.95): another dish with amazing value. It was overflowing with salmon skin. Another must try!
We also tried the fried geso aka squid legs ($7.95), agedashi tofu ($6.95), and gyutan aka beef tongue ($8.95). These were ok, we'd recommend sticking to the premium chirashi and salmon skin salad. There is also an omakase option available for 10 pieces that comes out to like $60-70pp. Not bad value given how expensive omakases are in LA.
There are limited tables at the restaurant so get there early. Or make a reservation ahead of time. Ample parking spaces in the lot. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back.
Excellent sushi and always fresh. Tried omakase and premium sushi and I would say that it would rival sushi gen in downtown Los Angeles
Small, quaint spot in an unassuming complex in Diamond Bar. Who knew?! I've lived here in this area for 5 years and i thought i've eaten in all the restaurants but noooo... Makomae you surprised me!
